Düsseldorf food and drink: plan your Altbier and bakery stops

Düsseldorf's food landmarks split neatly into two habits: the Altstadt brewpubs pouring their own Altbier and the counter stops where you buy something to carry away. Three of the breweries sit within a short walk of each other in the Altstadt, so a crawl between them takes an afternoon rather than a day of travel.

Füchschen on Ratinger Straße, Uerige on Berger Straße and Zum Schlüssel on Bolkerstraße each pour their own beer in small glasses, refilled without a fresh order. Uerige has been at it since 1862 and asks about an hour; Zum Schlüssel serves unfiltered Original Schlüssel from a 100-liter wooden barrel, with busy, rustic rooms, and takes one to two hours.

Schumacher, the oldest house brewery at Oststraße 123, works differently: two connected restaurants share the same hours, and reservations go through the website form with a confirmation email. It is the one stop where booking is required.

For non-beer stops, Bäckerei Hinkel on Mittelstraße has turned out 70 to 80 breads since 1891; plan about 15 minutes at the counter for a dark loaf plus a roll for the walk, and confirm hours before setting out. Konditorei Heinemann, with branches from behind the Altstadt to Oberkassel, sells truffles and pralines, though the champagne, whiskey and grappa versions need a label check for gifts.

Only Schumacher needs a reservation

Most of these stops take walk-ins, which keeps a food day flexible. Brauerei Schumacher is the exception: reserve through the website form and wait for the confirmation email before you count on a table. Planning ahead matters less for the beer itself than for the room, since its two connected restaurants share the same hours.

One day of Altbier and bread

With one day, start with Füchschen on Ratinger Straße for a sit-down Altbier with Rhineland cooking, then walk to Uerige on Berger Straße for a bitter glass and home cooking, pacing yourself on the small glasses. Finish at Bäckerei Hinkel for a loaf or pastry to take away. If you want the oldest brewery instead, book Schumacher and let its two restaurants carry the meal.
